Introduction
Brand collaborations have the power to introduce businesses to new audiences, create cultural relevance and generate fresh customer interest.
For Jo Malone London, the opportunity was to collaborate with one of Britain's most influential interior designers, David Hicks, whose bold use of colour, geometric patterns and distinctive visual language continues to inspire designers today.
The challenge was not simply to create a limited edition collection. It was to translate the essence of David Hicks into a cohesive brand experience that felt authentic to both worlds.
Understanding the Design Language
Every successful collaboration begins with understanding what makes each brand distinctive.
Research focused on David Hicks' interiors, fabrics, colour palettes and geometric patterns, identifying the visual principles that defined his work and made it instantly recognisable.
Rather than replicating existing designs, the objective was to reinterpret Hicks' design language through the lens of Jo Malone.

Creating a Fragrance Specific Identity
Three fragrances were selected for the collaboration: Lime Basil & Mandarin, Red Roses, and Pomegranate Noir. Each fragrance required its own visual expression while remaining connected to the overall collaboration.
Distinct pattern systems and colour palettes were developed and tested, drawing inspiration from Hicks' iconic textile and interior designs.
Green geometric patterns were selected for Lime Basil & Mandarin. Soft pink tones for Red Roses. Deep burgundy and smoky reds for Pomegranate Noir.

From Pattern to Product
Once the visual direction was established, patterns were refined, vectorised and applied across candles, fragrance packaging and supporting materials.
Multiple concepts and prototypes were developed to explore how the collaboration could come to life physically.
The goal was not simply decorative packaging. It was to create products that felt as though they belonged naturally within the world of David Hicks while remaining unmistakably Jo Malone.

Creative Problem Solving
Luxury projects often require balancing creative ambition with commercial realities. Budget limitations prevented the production of entirely new packaging for the collection.
Instead of redesigning the existing packaging system, a sleeve solution was developed that transformed the appearance of the products while significantly reducing production costs and complexity.
The result maintained the visual impact of the collaboration while allowing the campaign to be executed efficiently.

Creating a Multi Touchpoint Experience
The collaboration extended far beyond the product itself.
A complete campaign ecosystem was developed across:
– Retail displays – Window installations – Point of Sale Materials – In-Store Merchandising – Advertising – Customer Activation
The fabric swatch concept became the central creative device, connecting every touchpoint into a single coherent experience.
Designing for Global Rollout
Creating the concept was only part of the challenge. The campaign needed to be executed consistently across international markets.
Detailed implementation guidelines were developed covering materials, colour specifications, production requirements and installation standards.
Working directly with suppliers and regional teams ensured that the experience maintained its quality and integrity regardless of location.

What This Demonstrates
Successful collaborations are not simply about combining two brands. They are about creating a shared experience that feels authentic, memorable and valuable to both audiences.
This project demonstrates how strategic partnerships can extend audience reach, create cultural relevance and generate engagement through carefully crafted brand experiences.
By combining research, creative direction, product design, retail experience and global implementation, the collaboration transformed a design legacy into a cohesive luxury campaign.
